How to get debug information and open a proper issue

Also available in: PDF

For easier debugging and helping, when you contact us for a problem we always needs logs.
Most of the times the problems are specific to your installation since we use long validation process through Beta cycles with more than 6000 testers.
Please follow these 3 steps to gather Yatse and Kodi logs, then open an issue or send them by mail with details for efficient support.

1 - Generate Yatse logs

Yatse have a powerful log system that can be enabled to gather all needed information when something goes wrong.
You just need to activate Debug mode in Advanced Settings.

You must now reproduce the problem while the option is active to produce useful logs.

When you have reproduced the issue, uncheck the debug option and Yatse will propose to zip and email the log to simplify the process of getting the file.(To Yatse support by default but you can change before sending)

If you want to manually get the file:

The final log path in displayed as the Debug option description
This path is internal to Android so for example /storage/emulated/0 is in fact your SDCard so won't be visible from a computer browser.

  • Due to how MTP works on android if you don't see the file because you were already connected in USB, you need to either reboot your phone or use a tool like SDRescan to make the file visible.
  • On some devices logfile can be located in phone internal memory.

Do not forget to uncheck the debug option after incident resolution to avoid sdcard filling and slowdown of Yatse.

2 - Generate Kodi logs

Kodi Krypton / Leia

Go to Settings then System settings

Activate Enable component-specific logging then click on Specify component-specific logging
Then check Verbose logging for JSON-RPC requests and Verbose logging for Webserver requests

Activate Enable debug logging

Kodi Helix / Isengard / Jarvis

To activate debug mode in Kodi:

Go to System / Settings / System then Debugging

Activate Enable component-specific logging then click on Specify component-specific logging
Then check Verbose logging for JSON-RPC requests

Activate Enable debug logging

The location of the generated file depends on your operating system :

Log location

Android: Note: The first folder might be different on various devices : /data/org.xbmc.kodi /cache/temp/kodi.log or /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi /files/.kodi/temp/kodi.log
iOS/ATV2: /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/kodi.log
Linux: $HOME/.kodi/temp/kodi.log
Mac OS X: /Users//Library/Logs/kodi.log
Windows: %APPDATA%\Kodi\kodi.log

If you use portable mode then the log file is located in your Kodi installation directory in the sub directory: portable_data

3 - Fill a bug report

Please note that opening an issue on the website is prefered as easier follow and proper handling, but if you are really reluctant to create a new account for that you can contact us by mail and join the logs and details.

You need to register to this Website to avoid spam

Remember to use a valid email address as you'll need to confirm the registration to limit spam.

Once logged just go to the New Issue tab and fill the needed fields. Do not forget to upload the log files you generated earlier.
